To optimize your triathlon swimming you need both open water and lap pool training.  Open water helps with tri specific swim skills such as sighting, turning, drafting, and bumping while lap pool swimming improves your stroke mechanics and increases your speed with more focus on specific pacing for measured distances.  Swimming three times per week will help your swimming improve quickly.
