Why strength training is important for all athletes

As athletes we are always seeking ways to enhance and improve our performance.  While we often make time for more swimming, biking and running, strength training often takes a back seat.  But a properly focused triathlon-specific strength program can be the most efficient way to boost performance in all three disciples while helping you stay injury free.  The off season is a particularly opportune time to introduce strength training to your triathlon preparation regime.  Although most triathletes know how to exercise, many are confused about what exercises and types of structured workouts will specifically improve their running, biking, and swimming performance.

Experience Triathlon in now conducting a strength training class to introduce triathletes of all skill levels to properly formulated strength training program tailored specifically for triathlon.  The class is based on scientific research, experience of personal training professionals, and input from successful triathlon coaches and athletes around the country.  The class includes a different workout each week that is targeted at muscle groups that benefit one, two, or all three triathlon disciplines.  Metabolic exercises are interwoven with strength focused exercises to achieve a complete physical and aerobic workout.  Variants of each exercise are introduced to accommodate all skill levels from beginner to elite athletes.

In addition to improved performance and reduced risk of injury, a good strength training program can deliver the following benefits:

    • Enhanced strength and confidence
    • Muscular endurance and power.
    • Improved form and efficiency in all three disciplines
    • Decreased fatigue
    • Improved flexibility
    • Healthy, efficient body composition
    • Increased resting metabolism
    • Increased bone mineral density
    • Improved glucose metabolism
    • Maintain triathlon fitness while traveling

  • ET Strength 301: Mindful Strength Training for Triathletes

    January 10 – February 28

Triathletes tax their bodies in a number of ways, constantly looking for that extra edge to help them take their performance to the next level.  One of the overlooked and underutilized way to improving one’s performance, is with the proper execution of muscle actions and movements, so that NO MOVEMENT is made without purpose.

Experience Triathlon is excited and proud to announce the newest addition of training education to their highly rated programs, with the introduction of ET Strength 301:  Mindful Strength Training for Triathletes.  This is an 8-week course designed to teach athletes HOW to strength train with the goal of proper muscle mechanics to have a stronger swim stroke, a more powerful pedal stroke, and a more efficient run gait.  Specific strength exercises, as they directly pertain to swimming, biking and running, are explored in detail weekly, while teaching athletes HOW to control these muscle movements so THEY are in charge of their actions.

This course is co-coached by Kurt Woodward and Sarah Farsalas, who together are able to blend unique skill sets ranging from Kurt’s Personal Training credentials to Sarah’s Massage Therapy background.  Detailed muscle movements are so often overlooked, and it takes repetition and one-on-one coaching to help athletes FEEL what they are supposed to feel to execute the perfect swim stroke, pedal stroke and run stride.  Each weekly session will explore one discipline of triathlon, and one specific body region to help athletes learn in detail how to be productive with every movement.  Strength training exercises will then be taught, guided and executed by all class participants, with an overall body approach over the course of the 8 weeks.

There will be weekly “homework” for class participants, so that they can continue practicing exercises on their own.  Additionally there will be time spent in each class teaching athletes how to “undo” what they just did to their muscles via foam rolling and stretching.

Class size will be limited to 6 athletes so that each athlete gets the personal attention they need to truly understand and internalize what is being taught.  Two separate class times are offered, and classes will take place at the ET Training Center at Central Park Lisle.

By registering for this activity, I confirm that I have read and agree to the Experience Triathlon Release and Waiver of Liability Agreement.
