Coming into the Evergreen Triathlon, I felt that I had plenty of reasons to be nervous.  First and foremost among them was the fact that it would be my first time swimming the Olympic distance (1500 meters) without a wetsuit.  And this would be in the unfamiliar open waters of Lake Evergreen, no less!  I was also a bit concerned about the bike.  My previous Olympic distance triathlon (Pleasant Prairie, three weeks earlier) had been a challenge for me due to some unexpected hamstring pain on the bike leg, which also made the run difficult.  Add to all of this mental baggage the forecast conditions – extreme heat, my personal kryptonite – and it’s safe to say that I was feeling quite apprehensive as I made the drive down to Bloomington, Illinois, the afternoon before the race.

Wow!  What a race weekend.  Galena is such a beautiful area.  The drive in from Chicago is so cool as you start to feel the hills getting bigger and bigger as you get closer.  This was a big race for me.  My first ever triathlon was in Galena in 2008, and I came back again in 2009, and I must say, this course owned me both times.  Now it was time to come back, prepared and ready to settle the old score!!  I felt great heading into the weekend and was so excited about doing this race with all of the awesome teammates that we have.  Even the night before hanging out with Jason and Zeb (a newbie who I must say is now hooked :) ) and just talking about the sport was awesome.

Race morning was a nervous but incredibly exciting time.  The bus ride to the start was a blast and it was great having more than enough time to get warmed up in that cold water.  The previous two Galenas have not been fun swims for me, but this one was awesome.  I felt calm and confident (the hard work does pay off) and beat my expectations, coming out of the water in around 10 minutes.

One of our long standing Experience Triathlon traditions has been our annual road trip and season opening team triathlon to Memphis in May.  Last year at Memphis they announced a move of the race to Mississippi.  We decided on the way home that we’d take this opportunity to check out a much closer and very popular race that is always held on the same weekend as Memphis, The Galena Triathlon.

This past weekend, Team ET was out in force at Galena!  Our cool black uniforms with the ET yellow dot were everywhere, and, as usual, we were having a blast.  The crew flew through the 660 yard swim and transition 1, they worked the bike up all the hills and tucked for high speed on the downs.  Then they ripped up the 4.3 mile run course as the light rain fell to cool them off.

Indoor triathlons are a great way to get started in our sport.  They can also be a fun way to put a little racing into the winter off-season training for experienced athletes.

Our ET Indoor Tri Series was a smashing success this year.  We had great turnouts, awesome volunteers and big FUN.  We plan to expand the Series in 2012 with our first race coming in late January.

Congrats to all our finishers and a big THANKS to all the volunteers that helped make our events memorable.

Enjoy the pictures from our race series at our photo gallery.
